What is architectural design?

Architecture can mean:
  • The art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other physical structures.
  • The practice of an architect, where architecture means to offer or render professional services in connection with the design and construction of a building, or group of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use.[1]
  • A general term to describe buildings and other structures.
  • A style and method of design and construction of buildings and other physical structures.
Concept that focuses on the components or elements of astructure or system and unifies them into a coherent andfunctional whole, according to a particular approach in achieving the objective(s) under the given constraints orlimitations.

Architecture, Architecting and Architect, terms heard a lot nowadays. A couple of years ago we called someone programming software applications a programmer, now such a person is called a Solution Architect. Much more examples can be given according to the number of job descriptions containing the word ‘Architect'. Yes, I have to admit, my contract also states that I am an Architect. However, if the work an Architect does is architecting and the result of that work is an architecture, most job descriptions seems to be a little bit inaccurate in my opinion. To make that more clear, I will define what the architecture of a system is.
